Foreign ministers will be meeting later this year in the Netherlands to decide on measures to strengthen freedom of expression on the internet. That is the outcome of a conference on the subject which was held in Paris on 8 July. It was attended by around 75 representatives of governments, business, international organisations and human rights organisations.
The Netherlands is delighted that the United Nations General Assembly has voted to create a new institution, UN Women, which will work to achieve equal rights for women worldwide.
In a speech to the House of Representatives, Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Verhagen urged the Netherlands to ratify the Convention on Cluster Munitions as soon as possible. The Convention bans the production, possession and use of cluster munitions.
Protecting and promoting human rights is not only the responsibility of the government. Businesses, too, are accepting that they have corporate moral obligations.
The identification and repatriation of the Dutch victims of the airline disaster in Tripoli has now been completed. The last three were flown into the Netherlands this morning. The four members of the National Forensic Identification Team (LTFO) who were still in Libya arrived home on the same flight.
The European Union is to introduce a package of measures to eliminate child labour. This was decided by the European Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Luxembourg today, in response to an initiative by the Netherlands.
The Netherlands is pleased that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has been granted new powers to prosecute the crime of aggression. The agreement emerged from a conference reviewing the Rome Statute, which forms the legal basis for the ICC.
